VIC: Classic and vintage cars destroyed in Victorian bushfires
By Jeff Turnbull
MELBOURNE, Feb 20 AAP - Classic and vintage car insurer Shannons says more than 100
blue-ribbon vehicles stored in properties around regional Victoria have been destroyed
by bushfires.
Shannons national auctions manager Chris Boribon says there are probably more claims
to come in and fears many more vintage vehicles were uninsured.
Among the cars lost in the fires were a 1927 Vintage Auburn, best described as an American
Rolls Royce, valued at $50,000 and a 1923 Delahaye, also worth around $50,000.

AFTER SOME FALSE STARTS, A LISTING IS PRICED RIGHT
Byline: Kathleen Lynn
Section: REAL ESTATE
Type: News
The listing: Two-bedroom split-level
Location: Bergenfield
Listed by: Jennifer Ariano of Dick O'Connor Real Estate in Dumont
On the market: 2 1/2 years
Asking price: $219,000
The game plan: Ariano listed the house on the multiple listing service and advertised it on the Internet. She also e-mailed and called agents who were active in that price range. And she hired a photographer to take photos of the property.
The house was in good condition. Ariano did not recommend spending a lot on improvements because she felt the sellers wouldn't get that money back in the sale price.
The home had been on the market with other agents, starting in 2008 at an asking price of $349,900. As the market declined, the seller reduced the price repeatedly, settling at $249,000 before Ariano got the listing. She compared the home with similar properties nearby and advised the homeowner to list the house at $219,000.
"I couldn't really justify asking $250,000, when there were three- bedroom homes selling for $250,000," she said.
Once it was priced at $219,000, Ariano got an offer within four days. The buyer was concerned about water in the basement, and the sellers spent several thousand dollars to put in a French drain. But that wasn't enough to reassure the buyer, who backed out.
Three months later, another buyer made an offer.
"Just price it right, market it properly, get the agents in the door, and the house will sell," Ariano said.
The result: Another agent brought in the buyer, and the home sold for $210,000.

WA:Bushfires keep pressure on WA Premier
By Lloyd Jones
PERTH, AAP - West Australian Premier Colin Barnett may have basked in the warm glow
of a royal visit in 2011 but he also felt political heat from destructive bushfires that
burnt two of his ministers.
The capable premier has had a full year, with more ups than downs for his government,
and looks a fair prospect to gain a second term in alliance with the WA Nationals at the
next election, due in March 2013.
It's Barnett's ministerial team that's the worry for him - a few able performers mixed
with not-so-sharp operators who appear past their use-by date and ready to bumble.
The Liberal premier is fortunate the Labor opposition has been struggling to make headway
in the public opinion polls under leader Eric Ripper, an experienced parliamentary performer
who has failed to swing voters with his style.
But the opposition has made hits on the Barnett government, constantly highlighting
its increasing of utility prices, which strikes a chord in many WA households.
And two damaging bushfires that between them destroyed more than 100 houses in 2011
have opened the government to harsh criticism over fire management and prescribed burning.
The Perth Hills bushfire in February destroyed 72 houses and sparked a government inquiry
by former Australian Federal Police (AFP) commissioner Mick Keelty.
Keelty uncovered a lack of cooperation between WA's Fire and Emergency Services Authority
(FESA) and other agencies and a failure to follow correct procedures.
His report cost FESA's CEO Jo Harrison-Ward her job but Emergency Services Minister
Rob Johnson escaped direct censure in the report, although the opposition called for him
to be sacked.
It took a second fire that destroyed 32 houses and nine holiday chalets in the Margaret
River region in late November to prompt Barnett into action.
On December 5 he stripped Johnson of his emergency services portfolio, even though
Environment Minister Bill Marmion was copping the blame over that blaze.
Ripper called for Marmion to lose his job over the Margaret River blaze, saying he
was not up to the portfolio and was causing the public to lose confidence in the government's
prescribed burning regime.
The blaze spread from a prescribed burn by the Department of Environment and Conservation
(DEC) that got out of control.
The government has reappointed Keelty to examine that fire and whether DEC officials
made the right call in reigniting the burn when hot and windy conditions were forecast.
Whether Marmion cops criticism in Keelty's report remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Johnson remains police minister and Barnett insists his loss of the emergency
services portfolio was not due to criticism of his performance but because a fresh start
was needed with a "proven" minister.
That minister is the able but accident-prone Troy Buswell, who gained notoriety in
2008 when it was revealed he had sniffed the chair of a female Liberal Party staffer.
That and other indiscretions and mistakes cost Buswell the Liberal Party leadership
to the benefit of Barnett, who became in effect an accidental premier.
Buswell was accident-prone again in 2010, losing his post as treasurer after saying
he had misused government hotel and car entitlements during his exposed affair with Greens
MP Adele Carles.
Buswell and Carles were later cleared of any misuse of government entitlements.
Announcing on December 5 that Buswell would add emergency services to his transport
and housing portfolios, Barnett said he was "an extremely intelligent and capable minister".
Young Liberal frontbencher Christian Porter is another beneficiary of Buswell's indiscretions,
having been given the chance to prove himself as treasurer, which puts him in strong contention
for future Liberal leadership.
As attorney-general he has worked with Johnson on a series of tough new crime laws,
with votes undoubtedly in mind.
The new laws include sweeping changes to prostitution laws that will ban brothels from
suburban areas, a controversial public register for child sex offenders, name and shame
laws for repeat offenders and tougher penalties for cannabis possession.
The Labor opposition has its up-and-coming young guns too, most notably in Ben Wyatt
and Mark McGowan, who constantly score points against their government counterparts in
their portfolios.
But a fumbled and aborted leadership challenge by Wyatt against Ripper in January appears
to have put off any change at the top before the next election.
That's a problem for the party, given that the affable and experienced Ripper has been
unable to twist the public opinion polls his way.
The Barnett government ably hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)
in Perth in October and the premier and his wife glowed with pride as they hosted a massive
public barbecue on Perth's foreshore attended by the Queen and Prince Philip.
Royalties of the resources kind will continue to be a focus for the resource-project-loving
premier in 2012 as he continues to gear up the state for a prosperous future.
Two pet resource projects Barnett's been pushing hit trouble in 2011.
A strong protest movement has been doing its best to kill the controversial $30 billion
gas hub proposed for James Price Point in the Kimberley, citing expected damage to the
environment and Aboriginal heritage sites.
While Woodside Petroleum and its joint venture partners are still to make a final investment
decision on the project, Barnett remains confident it will go ahead, given the support
from traditional owners for a deal that will see $1.5 billion flow to indigenous communities
over 30 years.
Another resource project headache for Barnett was the troubled Oakajee port and rail
development in the state's mid-west, put in jeopardy after Murchison Metals pulled out
for lack of funds.
But Japanese joint venture partner Mitsubishi has stepped into the breach, making it
likely a staged project of some sort will still go ahead to ensure the region's iron-ore
reserves can be shipped out.
Barnett is no WA secessionist but does talk of an economic uncoupling of the west from
the east, referring to Perth becoming Australia's Indian Ocean capital focused on Asian
markets demanding his state's plentiful minerals, oil and gas.
Such talk comes out when Barnett targets the federal government's mining and carbon
taxes that he says will hurt WA.
The Barnett government moves into 2012 in the midst of a dangerous bushfire season,
hoping no more damaging blazes or poor ministerial or departmental performances will tarnish
them further.
The premier says he is planning no more reshuffles, but he may yet be forced to carry
out another controlled burn of dead wood on the front bench to prevent an even worse political
flare-up.

FED:Consequence of leaks will be bad: expert
By Peter Veness
CANBERRA, Dec 14 AAP - Foreign policy expert Rory Medcalf has called for a considered
debate on the impact of the ongoing publishing of classified diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks.
Mr Medcalf, a senior policy analyst at the Lowy Institute, argues the release of the
cables would hurt western diplomacies more than authoritarian nations such as Russia and
China.
The website is bad for diplomacy and encourages voyeurism, Mr Medcalf said.
"My focus is very much on the consequences," Mr Medcalf told AAP on Tuesday.
"I'm trying not to attack WikiLeaks as such."
In an earlier blog posting, he attacked the media for focusing so heavily on the continued
publication of cables, suggesting newspapers were doing it for commercial reasons.
"The commercial motive for certain Australian newspapers' sensational treatment of
the story would be less distasteful if they were also willing to follow the example of
The Guardian and publish the quoted cables in full," Mr Medcalf wrote in his blog on Tuesday.
"If the public really needs to know, then there's no time like the present and no reason
we should not see the original documents."
"The leaking of a cable spelling out sensitive US-NATO nuclear discussions is really
defensible only if equivalent Chinese and Russian secret memos are going online any time
soon.
"It is interesting that The Guardian has already had second thoughts, taking the nuclear
cable off its website."
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange previously has voiced his desire to radically downgrade
US power.
Mr Medcalf says one partial winner from the leaked cables is the intelligence world.
"A new world of large-scale diplomatic leaks will also mean extra duties for counter-intelligence
players, like the FBI and ASIO.
"This will help boost their budgets, but will also be a damaging diversion of their
capabilities, since they already have plenty of threats to manage in an age of terrorism
and great-power tensions."
At 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday, the WikiLeaks site had published 1344 of the promised 251,287 cables.

CANBERRA, Aug 6 AAP - Labor's promise to investigate high-speed rail from Brisbane
to Melbourne has been labelled a "trainspotting exercise" by Nationals Senate leader Barnaby
Joyce.
Labor on Thursday announced a a $20 million feasibility study into a network linking
Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, and also backed a $4.7 billion plan to build
an inland rail link.
But Senator Joyce said it wasn't serious.
"They talk about a high-speed train between Brisbane and Melbourne," he told ABC Radio.
"When you get to the details, it's a ... $20 million study between Newcastle and Sydney.
"What we end up (with) is another study, another trainspotting exercise this time."

Fed: Rudd's IR changes to end golden economic era: Abbott
By Melissa Jenkins, Don Woolford and Julian Drape
CANBERRA, Dec 1 AAP - Coalition MPs are lining up to trash the Rudd government's proposed
industrial relations changes despite admitting Labor has a mandate to kill off Work Choices.
Tony Abbott, the workplace relations minister between 2001 and 2003, said Labor's IR
bill signalled the end of decades of clever reforms.
He praised the reforms begun by the Hawke-Keating government, and continued under the
Howard government.
"The great thing about the last two decades of sustained reform is that we have seen
in recent years Australia taking on the best of the world and winning. Not just in sport,
but in business and industry and economics," Mr Abbott told parliament on Monday.
"My fear is that that golden era in Australia's economic history is about to end."
Labor's IR bill went much further than it promised in last year's election campaign,
particularly by allowing pattern bargaining, Mr Abbott said.
Pattern bargaining is a process where a trade union gains a new and superior entitlement
from one employer, and then uses that agreement as a precedent to demand the same entitlement
or a superior one from other employers.
The changes would lead to small businesses down-sizing and larger companies relocating
overseas, Mr Abbott said.
"I accept that the government has a mandate to, as they say, kill Work Choices, but
it certainly doesn't have a mandate to make a great leap backwards to 1970," Mr Abbott
said.
Opposition Workplace Relations spokesman Michael Keenan said the government was deceitfully
paying its debt to the trade union movement and the architect of the changes, Julia Gillard,
could become "the empress of unemployment".
The coalition won't oppose the bill's passage through the lower house, but reserved
the right to move amendments in the Senate after it had been scrutinised by an upper house
committee, he said.
Former ACTU secretary, Labor MP Greg Combet, said it gave him a great deal of personal
satisfaction to speak in support of the bill.
He said he'd seen first-hand the harmful effects of the Howard government's IR regime.
Labor's changes were a tremendous step forward for fairness and justice, Mr Combet said.
But they also represented significant economic reform.
"For the first time ... this legislation will bring into place an effective national
system of industrial regulation for the private sector," Mr Combet said.
The legislation relies on the corporations powers of the constitution rather than the
conciliation and arbitration powers.
This was an "historic shift" that meant ambit industrial disputes would no longer be
needed to bring the IR tribunal into play, Mr Combet said.
Debate on the Fair Work Bill 2008, which is expected to dominate most of Monday's lower
house proceedings, continues.

Fed: Taliban are Pushtuns, born to fight, says expert
CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - A defence and security expert says Taliban fighters opposing
Australian troops in Afghanistan come from a Pushtun culture which requires males to fight
as a right of passage to manhood.
Clive Williams, a visiting fellow at the Australian National University's Strategic
and Defence Studies Centre and former intelligence corps officer, described the Taliban
as "very good" infantry soldiers.
An Australian army commando was killed and four others were wounded in savage fighting
with Taliban insurgents overnight.
"They, of course, have a very long experience of fighting, particularly against foreigners.
They are Pushtun tribesmen," Mr Williams told Fairfax Radio Network.
"That is their way of life. To be a man in their society, to be regarded as manly,
you've got to have war experience.
"Their culture is built around fighting others. If they're not fighting foreigners
they're fighting among themselves."
Mr Williams said Australian troops were mainly involved in reconstruction programs
in Oruzgan province but they required aggressive defence.
"All of our reconstruction workers are trained as infantry as well, but to allow them
to get on with their work they need infantry protection," he said.
"If you're in an infantry unit then the role of infantry is also to dominate the ground.
"You can't afford to sit back in a base camp and let the insurgents dominate the area
because then they'll simply attack you at times of their own choosing.
"If you dominate the ground it gives you a bit more initiative."
The Taliban had the advantage of local knowledge, Mr Williams said.
"Inevitably, because they are from the area, the people that we're fighting, they do
have some advantages in terms of knowledge of the ground, particularly during night time
periods or when visibility is obscured or reduced."
Australia must continue to expect casualties among its troops in Afghanistan, he warned.

State's 'brain drain' impossible to ignore ; Opportunity is the key to keeping more young Mainers from moving away.
Edition: FINAL
Section: Editorial
A new report issued last week by the University of Maine has revived the perennial debate over the notion that Maine has trouble retaining its college graduates.
Almost 74 percent of the Class of 2005 had found full-time employment, according to the university's Office of Institutional Studies. Nearly two-thirds of those full-time workers elected to stay in Maine, continuing a recent trend.
That doesn't sound so bad, does it? Indeed, many headlines summarized the findings by saying that the state's "brain drain" was overstated.
But the numbers reveal a sobering arithmetic: Almost nine in 10 of the university system's students are Maine residents. Only 50 percent of graduates get full-time jobs and stay.
That's nothing to cheer about.
The state's elite liberal arts schools, Bowdoin, Bates and Colby, average only about 10 percent in-state enrollment. If half of our own kids are leaving to pursue opportunities elsewhere, where are we going to find young people to keep our state vibrant?
Maine is increasingly popular as a place to live - despite a flagging rural economy - for retirees and professionals willing to trade a portion of their income for a better quality of life. This represents a brain gain.
But Maine lost 42,000 young adult workers from 1992 to 2002. There's no positive spin to put on that number.
A society's future is embodied by its youth. Maine is already the oldest state in the country. The longer our economic prospects flag, the more likely our young people will leave.
There are things Maine can do to improve its economic prospects. Paring fat in school administration and state government, as a recent Brookings Institution Report suggests, is only a start.
Investing in education, like our thriving community college system, will cost money but help fill existing jobs in-state that are begging for workers.
Long-term infrastructure projects, like rural broadband Internet access and construction of an east-west regional highway, could help bring opportunities to our rural tier.
So might a unified state strategy to market our tourism economy, which will soon see the arrival of several new or refurbished resorts.
Creating alternative uses for wood fiber to keep our working forests working should also be a priority.
The surest way to combat brain drain is to give our college graduates every reason to want to stay.

Fed: Immigration bungle led to suspect walking free: Labor
By Kylie Williams
CANBERRA, April 25 AAP - An immigration department bungle caused by incompetent record
keeping had allowed a man wanted over a brutal double murder to walk free, Labor said
today.
But a department spokesman said it was not lawful to fingerprint immigration detainees
at the time and Tuan Dang Nguyen had taken on a new identity which led to him being detained
as an unlawful citizen.
The bungle allowed murder suspect Nguyen to avoid capture for more than two years while
he allegedly lived under a false name.
Nguyen was then wanted for murdering two women, Ba Thi Nguyen, 50, and Khan Le, 27,
in the Victorian town of Robinvale on April 21, 2001.
In September 2003 he was detained in Sydney's Villawood Detention Centre as an illegal
immigrant and was released into the community on a temporary protection visa 10 months
later without any police checks.
He was finally arrested at Cabramatta in Sydney's west last Monday and has been extradited
to Melbourne, but The Age today reported police are furious about the bungle.
Opposition immigration spokesman Tony Burke said the case showed how incompetent the
immigration department's record keeping was and how important it was for it to be improved.
"This adds to the demand for record keeping and ID monitoring to be state of the art
in the department of immigration," he told AAP.
"It should never have been allowed to collapse the way it did.
"The same incompetence of record keeping that caused Australians to be locked up can
now be seen to have caused a wanted man to be released into the community."
But the immigration spokesman said it had no cause at the time to doubt that the man
was who he said he was.
"In September 2003 we did not have the power under the law to compel detainees to give
us fingerprints for identification," he said.
"As far as the department at the time knew he was who he said he was."
The spokesman said the law had changed after the Palmer and Comrie reports last year
into earlier immigration department bungles and detainees could now be made to provide
fingerprints.
He said Nguyen also gave a false name and supplied false identification documents to
the department.
The department now also has a national identification and advice centre where police
databases across the country can be checked.
Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone yesterday said she was aware of the case and it
was being looked at.
Only last month commonwealth ombudsman Professor John McMillan called on the department
to review its procedures for dealing with cases in which the identity or immigration status
of the person is in question.

SA: Dajka released from custody
ADELAIDE, Aug 23 AAP - Former world champion cyclist Jobie Dajka has been released
on bail on strict curfew conditions and ordered not to contact his father.
The 24-year-old, who has been in police custody since early Friday, also had other
bail conditions set when appearing in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court today.
Dajka was arrested last Thursday night for assault and property damage after a disturbance
at his parents' home at Paralowie, in Adelaide's north.
He was released on bail but rearrested early on Friday morning after allegedly contacting
his parents by telephone, a breach of his original bail conditions.
Appearing in court today on a breach of bail charge, Dajka was granted fresh bail,
after accepting conditions which included a 9pm-7am (CST) curfew.
Another condition set by Magistrate Kevin Edgecomb was that Dajka not approach or communicate
with his father Stanley.
Contact with his mother Christine is allowed, but Dajka must not attend his parents' house.
Dajka is due to reappear in court on October 17.

In Japan, they hang them high, but also very quietly -- Executions are extremely private affair

OSAKA, Japan - Mamoru Takuma's wife had heard executions happened only when Parliament was in recess, and rumor had it the justice minister was planning to resign in the next week or two, another bad sign.
But the voice on the intercom caught her off guard.
It was midmorning. She had been doing some research on the Internet for a lawsuit her husband was working on. It was a complicated matter and she was planning to visit him in prison that afternoon to brief him on what she had learned in the week since they last met.
The prison official was businesslike, even curt.
"Your husband died well," he said.
"As soon as he opened his mouth, I fell to the ground and covered my ears," she said. "I never expected our time together to be so short."
By any measure, Mamoru Takuma was a vicious murderer.
On June 8, 2001, he burst into an elementary school on the outskirts of this western Japan city and began slashing the terrified children around him. Eight died. Takuma had no particular connection to any of his victims. He simply wanted to die, and to take others with him. He saw killing children as the best means to that end - knowing that a crime so heinous would ensure he was hanged.
Japan and the United States are the only advanced industrialized countries that retain the death penalty.
But they are vastly different.
In Japan, with much less violent crime to begin with, death is a rare sentence. There are currently 62 condemned prisoners here, and only two have been executed this year. In the United States, 3,374 prisoners were on death row as of the end of last year and 65 were executed.
What also separates the two is the thick wall of secrecy hiding the Japanese system from public scrutiny.
Death row inmates are carefully isolated from the general prison population. Takuma's widow said her husband was placed alone in a padded, windowless cell shortly after his conviction and remained there until his execution roughly one year later.
To avoid political debate, executions are not carried out when Parliament is in session and are timed to coincide with the departure of the justice minister who issued the execution order. Daizo Nozawa, for example, was replaced in a Cabinet reshuffle 10 days after Takuma was hanged.
When it is time, a guard appears at the inmate's cell, usually early in the morning. A Buddhist priest - or, as Takuma requested, a Christian minister - is called in.
The fact of execution is kept secret from even the prisoner until about an hour beforehand, and there are no last-minute appeals, no final goodbyes. Until 1998, there was no official confirmation an execution had taken place. Officials still refuse to confirm to the media the names of those hanged. The information has to come from the families or lawyers.
By the time executions are carried out, the prisoners usually have little or no connection to the outside world. Often on death row for more than a decade, their crimes are likely to have been forgotten by the public. Most have been divorced by their wives and disowned by their families.
To the rare relative who comes to claim a body, officials have little to say. "All they said was that he was given a last cigarette and some juice to drink," Takuma's widow said. "And that he didn't cause a fuss."

Epilipili Is Born of Lightning
Lightning and Otu lived together as brother and sister. On one occasion, Moon visited the newly married pair and expressed his astonishment at their attitude toward each other. He scolded Lightning as a dolt who did not know what the woman was there for. Lightning did not learn his lesson until Moon, sensing the desire of the woman, gave her a husband, Mupe. When Otu gave birth to a male child, Lightning sired many children by her, with whom he went to heaven after Otu's death. One, Aporofandza, is the first ancestor and hero of the culture; another, Epilipili, the creator god, has many of the characteristics of Aporofandza. The creator god appears to be a fusion of the two. See also: Arebati, Baatsi, Masupa, Tore.

Check out the library, says Tommy Watkins. It's a really neat place where fantasy, fiction, history and the future are right at your fingertips. When Tommy isn't at Thomas or Hageman public libraries - just for fun - he's volunteering his time at Hageman Public Library.
"I love to read, I love being there with all the books," he says.
"I really never know what I'm going to the library for. I go down there for one thing and I find all these other things to read about."
Tommy, who enters ninth grade at Chesterton High School this year, reads three to five books each week and uses the library for school work as well.
"There are lots of reference books and the people who work there are always willing to help you with any questions that you have," says the 14-year-old.
"Using the library/media center to obtain information for a report, project, whatever, is almost like going on a treasure hunt," says media specialist Linda Mapes at Liberty Middle School.
She suggests the "five-finger test" to determine if the book is within the student's reading and comprehension capabilities.
Choose any page from the book, and raise a finger for every word the child does not understand.
"If it is five or if you have reached five before the end of the page, it would be better to choose another book.
"It is too hard for now," she advises.
"Once you have found a book that looks interesting, take a few minutes before you check it out to be sure it is the one that will be right for you," she adds.
"The crucial job of ours is to teach kids how to critically analyze what they are reading," says media specialist Mara Becking at Chesterton High School.
The Internet has broadened the opportunities for student research. But the job goes beyond discovery.
"I tell kids it's not enough that they found it on the Internet; they need to know where it is, who is saying that, if they can verify the facts and if the information is up-to-date," Becking says.
"But just as computers have not made this a paperless society, I don't think the Internet is going to do away totally with our more traditional forms of media like books, magazines, newspapers and things like that.
"I think Internet will be a compliment, another way to access information." THIS ELECTRONIC VERSION MAY DIFFER SLIGHTLY FROM THE PRINTED VERSION.

Dr. Earle will speak at the Connecting Heroes award ceremony scheduled in the aquarium's "Tide Machine" area at 10:00 a.m., December 2, 2000.
"We're thrilled to host this special event to recognize these students' accomplishments as well as their heroes that connect them to the environment," said Monterey Bay Aquarium Public Relations Manager Mimi Hahn. "The aquarium introduces school children to marine life on a daily basis and we're pleased that we are able to serve as the backdrop for the awards ceremony and Dr. Earle's visit."
"Through the Connecting Heroes program, 3Com has helped educate students on the importance of connecting with the heroes of their daily life," said Jan Rasmussen, Director of Consumer Public Relations, 3Com. "Education is vital to our world's children and we are encouraging children through our Connecting Heroes program to consider their `connections' with the heroes in their own lives."
Geared for children in 4th through 12th grades, the Connecting Heroes Essay Contest asked students to write essays explaining who their hero is and how this hero has impacted how the student connects with the world. The essays, which were judged by Chicago area teachers, were critiqued on originality, creativity, organizational structure, clarity, neatness, legibility, spelling and grammar. The essays were divided into three grade categories (4th-6th, 7th-8th and 9th-12th grades), and one winner was selected from each category. The winners are:

Rights group urges more freedom for women.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
Human Rights Watch urged Saudi Arabia yesterday to abolish the system that bars women from working, travelling, marrying or accessing healthcare without the consent of a male guardian. "Human Rights Watch calls on Saudi Arabia to take immediate action to address the human rights abuses resulting from male guardianship policies," the New York-based watchdog said in a report.
"The Saudi government should abide by its international obligations and dismantle this grossly discriminatory system," HRW said, calling for the establishment of an "oversight mechanism" to ensure it stops being applied. HRW said the male guardianship of women and policies of sex segregation in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom deprive women of their basic rights.
"Saudi women often must obtain permission from a guardian - a father, husband, or even a son - to work, travel, study, marry or even access healthcare," it said. Authorities "treat adult women like legal minors" who cannot make even "trivial decisions" for their children without written permission first from the child's father.
HRW said that male guardianship over adult women "contributes to their risk of confronting family violence, making it difficult for survivors of violence to avail themselves of protection or redress." Saudi women are also banned from driving in the country.

Strayer University To Deliver Financial Planning Session at NFLPA's Rookie Symposium on June 28th.
Sessions Will Offer Step-By-Step Playbook for Long-Term Financial Success and Tips for Staying Positive in Year One
WASHINGTON -- Strayer University, a leading post-secondary adult education institution, announced today that it will lead the financial planning program during the NFL Players Association's rookie symposium, "The Business of Football: Rookie Edition," to be held in Bradenton, Florida June 28-29th.
"We are pleased to partner with Strayer University to offer financial planning coursework during the NFLPA's inaugural The Business of Football: Rookie Edition event," said DeMaurice Smith, executive director, NFL Players Association. "Financial education is incredibly important at the outset of a player's career and through this event and other programs, the NFLPA is committed to instilling all NFL players with the necessary information and skills that can help lead them to a path of financial success throughout their career and in life after football."
Strayer University will team up with former Washington Redskins and Hall of Fame Coach Joe Gibbs as well as retired Detroit Lions defensive lineman Luther Elliss as part of the financial planning portion of the symposium. Gibbs and Elliss will provide personal perspectives on life during and after the NFL as well as their experiences with financial challenges, while Strayer University financial experts will facilitate five financial planning breakout sessions focused on personal financial planning for athletes, assessing personal spending habits, financial goal setting during the first year in the NFL and making good decisions for the long-term. Approximately 125 rookies are expected to attend the symposium.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to positively impact new players entering the NFL this season with the knowledge and discipline to ensure a solid and sustainable financial future," said Karl McDonnell, chief operating officer, Strayer University. "The coursework for the symposium was designed by Strayer University's faculty to give new players a thorough understanding of basic financial planning as well as easy steps they can take now to ensure success, specifically during their first year in professional football. We want to ensure that they approach financial planning positively and that with the right tools and mindset, they can achieve their financial goals."
Strayer University, founded in 1892 and whose flagship campus is located in Washington, D.C., developed and led a similar program in partnership with Joe Gibbs last summer for the Washington Redskins that aimed to help players and their families make more informed decisions about managing their money and planning for a financially secure future after football.
"Strayer University has been an excellent partner in helping to educate pro football players about the importance of financial planning for long-term success and I'm confident that the rookies will benefit from the financial coursework at the symposium as much as the Redskins players did last summer," said Joe Gibbs, former Washington Redskins coach and founder of Joe Gibbs Racing. "I personally have made some financial mistakes from not understanding corporate structures and liability issues, and I want to do everything I can to inform and equip these athletes, both new and experienced, to make the best decisions possible. I am thankful to the NFLPA and Strayer University for helping us further the cause of financial education for players."
The financial planning session is scheduled for June 28th from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. For additional information about Strayer University, visit www.strayer.edu. OPRAH'S FAVORITE SOAP MAKER TO TEACH "MY SMALL BUSINESS 102" CLASS AT ADIRONDACK BUSINESS CENTER IN SARANAC LAKE.
SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. -- The following information was released by Clarkson University:
The Adirondack Business Center, in its mission to support regional small business owners, will offer "My Small Business 102: Strategies and Inspiration for the Creatively Inclined" on Wednesday evenings, May 25 through June 15, at the Adirondack Business Center in Saranac Lake, N.Y.
Designed for artists and craftspeople in all stages of their business, this four-part series will focus on using the artisan's artistry to advance their businesses.
Sandy Maine, proprietor of the SunFeather Natural Soap Company in St. Lawrence County, will instruct.
After reading a $3 book on soap-making, which she purchased in a Saranac Lake bookstore in 1979, Maine began her business in her backyard using a small generator and water she hauled in five-gallon pails from a nearby spring to get started making all-natural soaps. Specializing in artful colors, textures, and scent palettes, her products integrated artistic form as well as practical function.
Her business grew and employees joined in to help with the increasing workload until Maine eventually moved on to product development, sales, and marketing, where she again creatively implemented artistry in her work.
While preserving a socially responsible model of operation for her business, a hands-on approach, and utilizing healthful organic ingredients, Maine specializes in keeping artistry a very important component of her company's work.
In 2005, SunFeather Natural Soap Company was selected to provide hundreds of pounds of six custom scented soaps for Oprah Winfrey's 50th birthday party.
She has written numerous articles and books on soap making and microenterprise. She is also the founder and director of the non-profit organization Community Supported Business Start-Ups, which has given nine microenterprise grants to local start-ups since its inception.
The four-part series will include "Your Life, Your Art, Your Business," The Art of Management: Maintaining, Growing and Sustaining Your Business," "The Creative Art of Marketing," and "Selling What You Make."
The fourth class of the series will include guest instructors Hilary Oak, executive director, St. Lawrence County Arts Council; Mary Hilton, owner, Maple Run Emporium; and Dorothy Yanchitis, owner, the Ray Brook Frog. This class will run from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on June 15. The first three classes will meet from 6-8 p.m. on May 25, June 1, and June 8.
To register, contact the Adirondack Business Center, 141 River Street, Saranac Lake, N.Y., at 518-354-8410 or adkbusiness@clarkson.edu.
The Adirondack Business Center is sponsored by Clarkson University's Center for Entrepreneurship in Potsdam, N.Y. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
New Computational Psychology Research Has Been Reported by J.E. Owen et al.
"A strength of computer-based interventions is the capacity to tailor to individual differences, but most studies have tailored to self-report, rather than linguistic, data. The purpose of the present study was to develop and evaluate the effects of linguistically-tailored feedback on an Internet-based expressive writing intervention," investigators in Loma Linda, United States report.
"Two hundred eighty-one participants were asked to engage in 3 days of expressive writing and were randomly assigned to one of 3 feedback conditions: control (no feedback), simple (feedback about levels of emotional expression), and directive (simple feedback + suggestions for emotional processing). A Perl-based implementation of Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) was developed in order to provide dynamic feedback to participants based on levels of emotional expression identified in their writing. This implementation provided near-perfect correlations with standard LIWC output, r's =.98-1.00. Positive and total, but not negative, emotional expression increased over time for those who received simple or directive feedback," wrote J.E. Owen and colleagues.
The researchers concluded: "That linguistically-tailored feedback has the potential to alter patterns of engagement in computer-based interventions. However, additional research is needed to identify the most effective types of feedback in order to enhance immediate effects on writing and longitudinal effects on relevant outcomes."
Owen and colleagues published their study in Computers in Human Behavior (Linguistically-tailored video feedback increases total and positive emotional expression in a structured writing task. Computers in Human Behavior, 2011;27(2):874-882).

CMG Reports First Quarter Fiscal Year 1996 Earnings.
WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 1995--CMG Information Services, Inc. (NASDAQ NMS Symbol: CMGI) today announced net income for the first quarter ended October 31, 1995 of $18,178,000 or $3.81 primary earnings per share and $3.70 fully diluted earnings per share compared to first quarter of fiscal 1995 net income of $516,000 or $0.11 earnings per share on both a primary and fully diluted basis.
Significant items included in income from continuing operations before income taxes of $28,878,000 for the quarter were a gain from the sale of available for sale securities of $30,049,000 and operating losses from the Company's Internet start-up operations.
Operations for CMG Information Services, Inc. in the first quarter included activities in three business segments: Internet investment and development, list and list services and fulfillment services.
The Company's operating loss from continuing operations for the quarter ended October 31, 1995 was ($1,206,000) compared to operating income of $818,000 for the first quarter of fiscal 1995. The operating loss was attributable to losses from the development stage Internet portfolio companies and the @Ventures group. In the Internet investment and development segment (established in the third quarter of fiscal year 1995) losses from continuing operations were ($1,647,000). Included in operating losses were research and development expenses relating to the portfolio companies totaling $456,000.
In the first quarter of fiscal 1996, Lycos, Inc. acquired Point Communications Corp. The acquisition accounting and valuation for the Point acquisition by Lycos, Inc. may result in a significant portion of the purchase price being identified as in-process research and development, which will be charged to operating results in the second quarter when the estimated amount is determined.
The Internet investment and development portfolio companies are meeting reasonable expectations as to their development. NetCarta recently demonstrated two new unique products for web users and web masters, called CyberPilot and Web Mapper, respectively, at the E-Mail and Internet Conference on November 29, 1995. Black Sun Interactive, Inc. will be demonstrating its new product offerings at the Fourth World Wide Web Conference on December 12, 1995. Lycos, Inc. is proceeding with its marketing and sales plans and is generating backlog. Backlog for the Internet businesses was $569,000 at October 31, 1995.
Revenue for the list and list services business segment was $3,135,000 compared to $3,023,000 for the quarters ended October 31, 1995 and 1994, respectively. Sales were level due to increases in paper and postage costs which have impacted the entire marketing industry.
Operating income from continuing operations of the list and list services segment was $441,000 down from $818,000 for the comparable prior quarter ended October 31, 1994. The decrease is primarily attributable to increases in selling and operating expenses related to the launching of the new Elementary/High School Database product line. Though lagging, the product line has performed better than anticipated in the first quarter. Prior to fiscal 1996 all costs related to the development of the Elementary/High School Database product were capitalized. With the initial development of this list now complete, related costs are expensed and previously capitalized costs are now being amortized.
During the quarter, the Company sold its remaining 1,020,000 shares of America Online (AMER) common stock, receiving net proceeds of $57,462,000. Included in other income is the gain on sale of the AMER stock of $30,049,000, interest income of $263,000 from short-term investments and the Company's share of the operating losses of FreeMark Communications, Inc. of ($270,000).
The Company's fulfillment services business, SalesLink Corporation, has been presented in the accompanying Report of First Quarter Earnings as discontinued operations as it is available for sale. First quarter operating results after taxes for SalesLink were down 55% or $111,000 from $200,000 in fiscal 1995 to $89,000 in fiscal 1996. The financial results were impacted by expansion expenses in the Chicago operation and the introduction of new services. SalesLink booked substantially more new business than anticipated in the first quarter. The new bookings related to the mutual fund business and product expansion into the product fulfillment of CD ROM packaging.
Commenting on the Company, David S. Wetherell, CEO, stated, "We are continuing our investment strategy of pursuing Internet related opportunities with @Ventures and managing the development and growth of our current portfolio of Internet businesses. The companies are proceeding with the development of technology as planned. NetCarta recently demonstrated its tools for web site management and browser acceleration at the E-Mail and Internet Conference. NetCarta's CyberPilot and Web Mapper products may be considered two of the most important Internet technologies since Mosaic. Black Sun Interactive, Inc. will be demonstrating its virtual reality modeling language (VRML) products at the Fourth World Wide Web conference on December 12, 1995. These products could have the opportunity to revolutionize user interaction and advertising on the Web. Lycos, Inc. is being accepted as one of the premier search engines of the Web, while adding a vast array of new capabilities for end users. The level of expenses incurred to date for our Internet investments has positioned us to bring to market Internet technology sooner than previously contemplated.
Further, "The list and list services segment is positioned to take advantage of the Elementary and High School list markets by the investment made in the El/Hi database. We may be able to increase our market share in this market because of the competitive advantage of having a very comprehensive database.
The financial position of the Company is strong with a cash balance of $64,239,000 and unutilized line of credit of $5,000,000 which will enable us to continue the pursuit of our business strategies."
CMG Information Services, Inc. is a leading provider of direct marketing services and is an innovator in the development of new Internet, interactive media and database management technologies.
