Fed: Howard defends pollies pay rise
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has defended a 10 per cent pay rise for federal politicians,
but says he doesn't expect the community to be happy about it.
The Remuneration Tribunal yesterday recommended an $8,000 a year pay rise for backbenchers,
taking them to $90,000 a year, and almost $30,000 a year more for Mr HOWARD, taking him
to more than $230,000 a year.
Mr HOWARD, who's spoken out against executive salaries, says the rise is in line with
rises in the community over the pastee years.
And he says it doesn't bear any comparison at all to some of the extraordinarily generous
executive salaries that are paid.
