FED: Talks begin today on P&O s plan to cut staff by 40pc

SYDNEY, Jan 15 AAP - Tough negotiations for a new enterprise agreement at P&O Ports will
begin today after reports the stevedoring giant wants to slash its workforce by 40 per cent.

The wharfies' union yesterday refused to rule out industrial action over the redundancy
target which represents the loss of almost 600 jobs.

Both the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and P&O Ports expect nothing like the
confrontation which characterised last year's Patrick stevedoring dispute.
